Character names are given in kanji, then in Japanese romanization, then in Chinese romanization (where available). The novel gives the names in Japanese.


蛋子 Tanshi (Danzi Wang) - A monk who was (supposedly) born from an egg. Abandoning his temple, he sets out on a pilgrimage seeking the Way of Shattering Earth. 


胡媚児 Ko Biji (Hu Mei'er) - Daughter of Seikoko. She is a Daoist and a beautiful sorceress. 


聖姑姑 Sei Koko (Shan Gōgō) - A Daoist sorceress and a worshiper of Empress Wu Zetian.


劉玄 Ryū Gen (Liu Xuan) - A salt smuggler.  A fearless practitioner of the staff and Tanshi's master.


強鸞 Chō Ran (Zhang Dapeng) - A sorcerer who uses flame techniques. His original name was 強大鵬 , Chō Taihō.


慧會 Kei Kai (Hwei Hwei) - Head priest of Guangming Temple.  One of the salt smugglers.


李忠 Ri Chū (Li Zhong) - Monk of Guangming Temple. A master researcher and explorer.


天竜僧正 Tenryū Sōjō (Tianlong Monk Master) - Head priest of the Shaolin Temple. Master of the Shaolin Drunken Fist. This is likely a title, not a name; little is known of the historical Shaolin Temple during time period when this story is set.


雷允恭 Rai Ingyō (Lei Yungong) - Leader of the eunuchs of the Chinese Imperial Court and a government envoy. Honorable minister. 


九天玄女 Kyūten Genyo (Jiutian Xuannü) - A goddess that embodies the spirit of wisdom. Within Hakūn-do Cave, she appears as a halo of light.


袁公 En Kō (Yuan Gong) - An ape-man of unknown age. The keeper and guardian of Hakūn-do Cave.


Minor Characters:


張瑾 Chō Kin (Zhang Jin) - An elderly farmer.


石頭陀 Seki (Shi) - An itinerant monk.


楊春 Yang Chun (same in Chinese and Japanese) - A mythological character from The Water Margin, one of the great ancient classics of Chinese literature. In this story, he is a devout landowner who serves as Sei Koko's religious patron.


馬曚 Ba Mou (Ma Yi) - A thin guard who attempts to apprehend Tanshi and Ko Biji at Sanmenxia, and who later tries to track Tanshi down.


陳建 Chin Khen (Chen Jian) -  A burly, bear-like guard who attempts to apprehend Tanshi and Ko Biji at Sanmenxia, and who later tries to track Tanshi down.

 

介聘 Kai Hei (Jie Pin), Sei Koko's most trusted temple attendant. 


梁 Ryou (Liang), a warrior monk who serves as a gate guard at the Shaolin Temple on Mt. Song.
