Teito Monogatari:
The Tale of the Imperial Capital
Author: Hiroshi Aramata
MASTER POST
Teito Monogatari
(帝都物語)
is the the debut novel of Japanese author Hiroshi Aramata. It began
circulation in the literary magazine Monthly King Novel in 1983 and
was published in 10 volumes over the course of 1985–1987. The novel is a
romanticized retelling of the 20th-century history of Tokyo from an
occultist perspective, and can be regarded as an epic work of historical
fiction, dark fantasy, and science fiction.
If you've read any of my
Toriumi Jinzō translations before, this is that, dialed up to 11. Real literary figures
rub shoulders with fictional characters in a vividly realized, mostly
historically accurate setting, plus magic. And maybe explosions. Has the
distinction of having the protagonist also be the antagonist, at least
according to traditional story roles.
