Touko - An eleven-year-old girl who travels to the capital to return the belongings of a Fire Hunter who lost his life protecting her to his family.
Koushi - A fifteen-year-old student living in the capital. He researches lightning and fire fuel under the direction of Okibi Yuoshichi. His father is a Fire Hunter.
Kanata - A hunting dog owned by the Fire Hunter that saved Touko. He fights alongside Fire Hunters in the wilderness.
Hinako - Koushi's younger sister. Born sickly due to a birth defect caused by environmental pollution.
Akira - A wandering woman Fire Hunter with a tragic past who struggles for survival. Her hunting dog is Temari.
Kaho - She was sent out of her home village as a bride. She meets Touko in a black cart while Touko is traveling to the capital.
Shouzou - A crew member and mechanic on a black cart. He is seriously injured while taking Touko and her friends to the capital.
Kun - A Spider boy. He was abandoned in the Black Forest.
Roroku - A skilled Fire Hunter from the Islands. His hunting dog is Mizore.
Yuoshichi - Patriarch of the Okibi family and owner of a factory that creates synthetic meat. He instructed Koushi to develop weapons using lightning fuel.
Kira - The only daughter of the Okibi family. Beautiful and intelligent.
Hibana - Yuoshichi's wife; an attractive lady. She comes from a poor area.
Hotaru - Sent away from her home village as a bride. She meets Touko on the black cart.
Benio - Sent away from her home village as a bride. She lost her life when the black cart that she and Touko were riding in was attacked.
Hibari - A Guardian God with control over wind. She maintains a spy network in the capital.
Kiri, Willow, Kunugi, Shuyu - Tree People who live beneath a gigantic tree in the capital called the Well of the Old Tree.
Kureha - A servant at Okibi Estate. Her current whereabouts are unknown.
