Yatagarasu Series
Author: Abe Chisato
MASTER POST
Yatagarasu—a reference to a large three-legged crow or raven that serves as a divine guide in Japanese
mythology—is a quasi-historical novel series that borrows from Japanese and Chinese
imperial traditions and customs, but isn't set in any specific time
period.
The first novel in the series opens on a
succession crisis. Four young noblewomen will compete to become the next empress,
a position of great power and privilege... but they're also not quite sure
who they're supposed to marry to do it. Two potential imperial heirs—one legitimized by religion, one by birth—navigate their complex social position just as tentatively as the
women do.
Add to that the fantastical ability that
some people have to turn into three-legged ravens and a healthy dose of mystery and intrigue, and you've got yourself
this series.

Do you plan on translating the side stories as well?
ReplyDeleteYes! I've started that already, but it's my habit to start with the main series and then go back and translate short stories/gaiden.
DeleteI'm so glad to have stumbled upon your translation of this series! I've been eager for another season of the anime to release, but it doesn't look like it will be happening anytime soon. Your tone and prose are captivating. I spent my morning devouring a volume because I just could not put it down. Thank you so much for your hardwork! 🩵
ReplyDeleteI'm so happy you enjoy these! It's my favorite thing I'm translating at the moment. Book 9 should be proofread and uploaded within the next 1-2 weeks. I sincerely hope you enjoy the rest of the series!
DeleteThank you so much for your hard work translating! So many volumes and I'm still in disbelief that we can learn more about this world beyond the anime through the novels/source material in English as well.
ReplyDeleteI hope you enjoy the novels! I am working on 10 and the first short story collection now. If all goes well, they'll be up here by September.
DeleteI really love the first series, but the second has been hit-or-miss for me. The books are still good, but the tone is overall much darker and sadder. :(
