A Note on Yukiya's Name
Yukiya gets a bewildering number of names and titles in the text. They are used in different contexts by different people.
Yukiya is rarely used in the Japanese text and is exclusively used to refer to Yukiya in the past or by Chihaya in the present.
Sessai is the name Yukiya uses to introduce himself to social equals or in polite company. It is the name he took when he joined the priesthood.
Hokurikukō is the Yellow Raven’s formal title, used by Yorito and other characters who highly respect Yukiya and his position in the Imperial Court.
Kō is used by Yukiya’s detractors, like Tobi, and his enemies, to express disrespect.
English doesn’t proliferate names and titles like this, so characters like Chihaya that know Yukiya’s original name make use of it consistently. Sessai is used by Imperial Court officials and Hajime. Everyone else calls Yukiya the Yellow Raven. These changes were made to prevent confusion in the text.
